There really isn't a dictionary of terms that dictates how every team has to use the reference. There are however coaching trees that spark the concepts and get reused by their off spring and the better the coaching tree the more it will become common place across teams.

You may have some coaches that will change their references just so another team hearing the phrases may not as readily understand it.

But for outsiders describing it (like commentators or fans) the explanations on here is what you are looking for to gain basic understanding.
