Twitter is not the Utah fan base any more that CB is indicative of the BYU fan base. I mean could you imagine how insufferable Church would be each Sunday if every BYU fan were like some of the CB fans? Good heavens that'd be the worst. Yet, it's not, I have plenty of die hard BYU fans in my ward and they are awesome and not at all delusional or holier than thou. Similarly, there are a few Ute fans in my ward and a lot in our stake (I'm in the Boise metro area by the way) and not a single one of them are vile and awful like Twitter Ute fans. Nor are the hundreds of Ute fans I am friends with and / or are family in Utah and elsewhere.

Yet online, (Twitter for awful Ute and delusional BYU fans), there are some (not all, but a small subset) who are toxic and awful. If you truly believe that a large percentage (and I'll say 5% is large) of Utah's fan base are the crazy, awful people you see on Twitter, it might be worthwhile spending some time off Twitter (which, let's be honest, is probably a good life move anyway).

The ONLY fan base that has played Utah regularly and HATES Utah fans is BYU. Yet, I can count at least a half-dozen fan bases that despise BYU fans (Wyoming, Utah State, Boise State, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV, Colorado State, Air Force — essentially the whole former MWC/WAC when we were in). Maybe that data point should tell you something about the state of the fan bases.

There are a ton of awesome BYU fans, I've always enjoyed myself when attending BYU games, even though I'm not a big fan of the team (though I don't hate BYU at all unless they are playing Utah). A vast majority are great, awesome people. I'm intellectually honest enough to recognize that those on Twitter and CB don't represent the whole of the Cougar fan base and the same is true of Utah.
