Unfortunately, BYU and Utah are tied at the hip again and battling for in-state dominance and national relevance. So,
Which of those scenarios for this 1 year have greater implications for relevance for the next 5-10 years?
BYU isn't expected to have the greatest year as is, and just getting to a bowl game is good. Does BYU become significantly more relevant by going 9-3, but no CCG or playoffs? Nope. It won't matter a whole lot over the next 5 years.
Does it hurt BYU more to have Utah gain in-state and national relevance by getting to the playoffs? Yep.
This isn't little brother or pettiness...this is a rivalry and two programs fighting to stay relevant.
Can't have utah have another 2008 type season and have a burst of momentum.
