Two tips from getting one for my kids (which they have enjoyed):
(1) get something cheap-ish to begin with. We got the Alesis Nitro base kit and then when our son progressed past that we got another Tom and cymbal pad. If he continues we will just buy a real drum set.
(2) there are a million other people like you who bought it and didn’t like it. We found our $400 retail kit on Facebook Marketplace for $150.
