I think this is mostly because many people don’t understand economics or the
meaning of the word “recession”. Many seem to think that inflation = recession, so their reasoning seems to be that there was high inflation a couple of years ago, and my dollar buys less than it did before, therefore we must be in recession (never mind that unemployment is very low and the economy is expanding).

Which is ironic, since recessions are usually times of low inflation or even deflation.
