Does it return an error code? If so google the brand and error code and follow
Instructions on how to fix

My own experience, from time to time, mine does the same as yours and it's usually been the drip tray underneath the dishwasher that fills with water and I have to empty it before it will work (I have a KitchenAid). I unclip the float switch and empty the water in the tray into the sink and clip the float switch back in and does the trick. ( BTW this prevents your dishwasher from flooding the kitchen and shuts down the dishwasher if the tray fills with water).

You might also check and see if the inside of the dishwasher filter needs to get cleared/cleaned out - might not be emptying water or something.

Also they don't make dishwashers like they used to - we are on our 3rd dishwasher in 9 years (first two were Whirlpool - fingers crossed on our KitchenAid)
