If/when Kalani departs, is there a football equivalent of Kevin Young?
For starters, I'm not wishing for Kalani to leave. He really has been a good representative of the school and his players seem to love him. Recruiting, coaching staff, and in-game decisions have been up and down though. Compared to Lavell Edwards I would say he's been worse in all three of those areas. Hopefully recruiting will continue to improve as it has been.

While Kevin young hasn't actually coached a game yet, in the areas of recruiting and staffing, he's clearly hit a home run already. And it's hard to be concerned about his coaching abilities when he was one of the top assistant coaches in the NBA. I guess I wonder if there's a football equivalent out there somewhere. A rising star in the NFL who's a member of the church and who can do what Kevin Young has done in basketball if we offer competitive compensation. It seems like no one even knew about Kevin young until the announcement of his hiring, so perhaps there's someone like that in the NFL too.

Coaching is a huge component of success in the college game, and if I'm perfectly honest with myself, if I were a top recruit I might be nervous to come to Provo rather than being coached by Kirby Smart, or Harbaugh, or Sarkisian, even though I firmly believe in the mission of BYU. Holmoe seemed to have a plan in place for when Pope left, so let's hope there is a similar plan for when Kalani departs. Or maybe these things can gradually improve with Kalani at the helm if he can get more money for assistant coaches and recruiting. We do seem to have a good defensive coordinator now, which required $$.
