Help me decide which HVAC company is right. Can my 5 ton condenser be smaller
than my 4 ton condenser of the same brand, timeframe.

Recently moved in and one of my condensers gave out. I got 3 quotes from different companies. I told them when they arrived what I assumed to be the problem - that my 4 ton unit isn’t working - it feeds the master bedroom/bathroom while the 5 ton (still working well) feeds the larger portion of the house.

The first two companies gave me a quote for replacing the 4 ton unit. The third company said they looked up the serial numbers on the condensers and the smaller condenser is actually the 5 ton unit and the bigger one is the 4 ton unit. I asked why the bigger unit feeds the smaller area and he guessed that it was because it had to travel further to get to the master bedroom.

Both units are the same brand and were placed at the same time in 2010 - they look identical other than size. I tried googling the model numbers and couldn’t find anything myself. The numbers (which I don’t understand) on label of the smaller unit are bigger -minimum circuit ampacity for example. This seems to support the smaller unit being the bigger tonnage but I can’t find anything saying it is a 5 ton unit.

So, is it possible for the smaller unit to be the bigger tonnage? Or is there some sort of mixup with the labels? The third company is the only one that caught this, though I’m certain the others didn’t look at the labels and followed my assumption.
