Airline compensation question
My SIL had a flight delayed making it impossible for her and her 2 children to make the connecting flight. There are no flights with the same airline until Monday (2 days). There is one flight tomorrow (Sunday) with a diffetent airline that costs around $600 per person (it’s the only flight that isn’t 15-24 hours long which would be pointless). The original flight was delayed due to a mechanical issue.

I would just buy the flight for tomorrow but I’m worried I won’t get fully reimbursed. We did go ahead and reschedule their flight to Monday with the same airline and my SIL and kids can stay with us but I feel like if we go this route the airline should owe us for hotel costs, food, etc. Problem is when we spoke to the airline they told us our only recourse is to write an email requesting compensation but this of course means no immediate answer and again the possibility of not getting reimbursed. Getting a refund does not help because I purchased these tickets with points.
