From where I'm sitting it's worse than ever. Only a tiny percentage of kids are
getting subsidized. Extremely tiny.

I live in DFW. It's virtually impossible to get on a top team with anything resembling a pro development track for less than $4,000-$5,000 per year as a minimum. That includes FC Dallas.

Nobody who isn't on a top club team is playing for a respectable high school program or getting recruited to even a small, local college team. The NCAA scholarship limit for men's D1 soccer is 9.9, with an average roster size of 20+. A large chunk of that money goes to foreign student athletes. So, even at our top college programs the financial burden on the athletes and their families is significant.
