My daughter is involved in a very expensive sport that will last until just after she turns 18 or maybe even 19. By that point, I'll be 62 or 63.
Of course, she could get burned on out on it and give it up before then. How would I know?
Anyway, we could buy a car every year with how much we pay for her sport.
That pushes off retirement a little.
My employer, which had given me a 5% increase every year for about 17 years, stopped doing that last year and I was told to expect no more than a 2% increase annually from now on. That hurts a bit too.
My wife is 9 years younger than I am and her income has recently overtaken mine and may grow significantly within the next few years. She has the crazy idea that I'll be able to retire at 65 or 67 and that we'll just live off of her income. Financially, that would easily work. The reality, however, is that I think it would bother her to have me sit around all day doing nothing while she brings in the money. She can't sit still for 5 minutes without finding a new task to do. Meanwhile, I'm content to sit in a chair and just stare out a window for hours. I think my laziness would bother her. Some days, I may not even get out of bed. Why bother?
Anyway, I don't know.
I guess I'll be financially independent by the time my daughter's outrageous cheer expenses are gone because of my wife's income, but does that even count?
