post in the pre-med forum. He'll get a good list. He's got a reasonable shot at his instate schools depending on where he's from. Go with the tried and true BYU list VU outlined above.
People say be well rounded but it's best to have one or two things to be great at while checking off the other boxes. Don't skimp on nonclinical volunteering either and tutoring and clubs don't count.
It isn't random. He needs to research the schools and write his secondaries with the school's mission in mind.
