The trailer revealed that the prior Spiderman villains were coming into the (current) Peter Parker's universe. It was heavily implied/expected that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire would be in the movie. You wouldn't bring in their villains and leave them out of it. Everyone went into the theater with a high level of confidence that they would be in the movie.
