I guess something similar was with Ben stiller and Robert dinero on meet the parents. The director purposely wanted Robert to be rude even off camera to Ben stiller to make the awkwardness more real while filming. It wasn’t until after the movie was finished that Robert told Ben that it was all just a part of making the movie better.
