be in the camp that we needed Utah, needed the rivalry (and it is one of the most fun rivalries in the country), needed wins over Utah, to bolster our national standing and recruiting in the region, but I don't think that's true anymore.
Utah has been, and would have, now or in the future, no problem relegating BYU to the history heap, and seeing BYU sports decline without even a glance in our direction. They have made it pretty clear that they think they're "above us" in the pecking order, and they don't really care what happens to BYU. That attitude tends to make the rivalry a lot less important. And with what BYU has done in the B12, and what KY is doing now with BYU BBall without Utah having any input or bearing on how successful BYU can be, it seems clear that continuing to play Utah in either FBall or BBall is a lot less important to BYU moving forward. If we beat them when they're otherwise having a great year, then great. But despite being an in-state rival, BYU's success is no longer yoked to Utah in the same way as it may have seemed to be (to some degree) in the past.
