It's called true edge processing. It's made possible by GPU such as NVIDIA makes. Even with the 16TOPS (trillions of
Operations per second), on a smallish SOM, it still takes upwards of 8 watts per chipset to run the algorithms. And it produces a lot of heat (which negatively affects the performance in a nonlinear way).

So they try to condition the data on-prem before sending it to the cloud - if they can even get the protocols to talk with other devices or even basic gateways. The data at-rest on the edge device is more at risk than the data in transit... and that a massive security problem that's nowhere near being solved.
