I taught the class first period at the high school and went with the team on weekends to coach and judge rounds. I spent summers either teaching at debate camps or attending coaches camps at the bigger Universities. That is one activity where you don't have to deal with parents in the heat of the moment. The worst I had to deal with was suddenly a parent not letting their kid attend a tournament and leaving their partner high a dry. My last child graduated in 2017 but I kept coaching even without my kids in it. I recently retired from my real job and moved to Nevada. Just today I am researching schools who might want an old volunteer debate coach (I'm only 61 and not 81 so I'm still good to go). I really miss the intellectual challenge and especially being at away tournaments in various states with my kids. If anyone in southern Nevada has a child that wants help on the debate team, let me know.
