It is a little odd given the size of the state, but it appears to be partly due
to the climate/geography and demographics. HS football and baseball are not big deals in CO like in other states. Weather in the mountains is tough in spring and fall. Outside the front range corridor, the rugged mountains makes travel more costly for youth sports in general.

CO is a hockey state. Hockey and swimming are huge here among the youth. Soccer is too. Basketball fairly popular. I don't know a lot of kids playing football or baseball seriously, but several that are heavily into hockey, swimming, and soccer.
