I'm no hurricane expert, but wouldn't Belize be on the "dry" side of the storm? The rotation of the storm
would push all the heavy rain and winds and storm surge north of the eye, while Belize would get the cycle thats rotated around the land and weakened.

At least the weather guys here in Austin always talk about that. If the storm hits northern Mexico or South Padre, we usually get a lot of rain. But if it hits north (Houston, Corpus Christi), we usually don't get much because we're on the dry side.
