RE: Signed son up for fall classes since he is still on his mission. Thoughts?
That should be fine. Not too challenging, but you might want to set 16 credits per semester as a target. One class that I found extremely helpful my first year at BYU was a personal finance class. When I graduated from HS, most high schools were pretty week in that area and I found it very helpful to take that class early in my BYU experience.

I took very heavy loads my first two years at BYU and lots of extra curricular stuff... lots of Honors Program courses, graduate history classes, double major in math and computer science, minor in history, with a strong minor in line standing and dealing with inane bureaucracy. I was very busy with the Ballroom dance team, competed in intramural sports, the BYU Chess tournament, studied infrequently, etc.

It also can be nice to once in a while take a class just for the fun of it. After my mission, I got together with 13 other BYU students from my small town in the PNW and we took a golf class from Vernon Law. It was a blast. Another fun class I took just for a change of pace was a house wiring class where I picked up skills that I have used numerous times over the years. I took an awesome Organizational Behavior class just for the heck of it and immensely enjoyed it. It paid dividends over the years as I matriculated through the corporate world.

My biggest challenge, though, was the fact that I graduated at the top of my HS class, yet never took a book home in four years. It meant that, when I got to BYU, I had to learn how to budget my time and how to actually study efficiently. Sometimes, it was a painful process. I highly recommend that any future BYU student be encouraged to become proficient in both of those skills.
