BYU's style/identity - finesse or power?
In the new world of NIL and transfer portal, do you think BYU should re-evaluate it's overall strategy, its style or identity? Lavell put BYU on the map by moving away from the power football that prevailed at the time, and won with an innovative passing offense-first style - a finesse approach. The thinking at the time was that BYU would not be able to get the sheer size and strength needed to compete with the Nebraskas, Oklahomas, and Ohio States of the 70's & 80's running in the trenches. So we honed a passing attack to outduel bigger stronger teams.

Kalani has come in and kind of reversed course, shifting the strategy to be like that of Kyle Whittingham's program - big, strong, tough, establish the run. You can see the logic, with the rest of the college football world catching up to BYU's pass heavy approach and employing athletes galore in west coast & spread systems, it seemed like BYU would have trouble competing with the speed and athleticism of its competition. With the polynesian connection, it made sense that BYU would be able to get a lot of large, strong bodies to fit this style.

In today's college football, with some of BYU's historical barriers softened by its ability to compete with $$ for players that might not have ever considered BYU before, coupled with BYU's membership in the power club (yes, not Super 2, but far cry from MWC or independence), has the profile of what type of players BYU can get changed enough to reconsider the style?

Is a return to our roots of innovative finesse offense over power football in order?
