Bottom line on Ortega
There were at least 4 major mistakes in the game. 3 are inexcusable. All 4 went against the United States.

1) Adams yellow card. Should have been a yellow in the other direction. Unfortunately, VAR can not be utilized to overrule this, so it's an excusable mistake. It's still very bad, but this kind of thing happens semi-regularly.

The 3 that are inexcusable:

1) The yellow card quick restart. If Ortega wants to allow a quick restart, he has the option to do that, and give the yellow card later. He immediately gives the card, and then realizes that he has eliminated what was admittedly an opportunity for Uruguay for a quick restart. But you can't give a card to a player in that scenario as the entire US team stopped for the card. He needed to immediately blow that play dead. It's not excusable to just allow Uruguay a quick restart while you're booking someone.

2) Perhaps the least influential, but most mind-boggling for me was the Uruguayan handball in the US half. Ortega rightly plays advantage for the US, and they work the ball out to Pulisic on the wing. He's in a 1 v 1 and beats the defender down the line. And at that point, Ortega blows his whistle, after advantage is actually established and the US is on the counter?!

3) Ortega isn't responsible for the VAR decision of Goal/No Goal. But the decision is just wrong. Even accounting for the foot, you can pretty clearly see Uruguayan knee extending beyond the line that was drawn. And if they had the semi automated technology, it would have been clearly offsides.
