The U.S. has the population, the money, the etc. But will never compete
because as a country we don't care enough.

We just don't and that is OK. We don't eat, drink, and breath soccer. We do have enough athletes--it is a fallacy to say our best athletes are used up playing the other sports. We have over 300M people, so there are plenty of elite athletes. We have the most money, the best science, the best nutrition, the best tech. If we want we can construct the best facilities, locker rooms, pitches (or whatever soccer people call fields), etc.

Still, at the end of the day, there are reasons that 3rd world countries punch above their weight, we punch below ours, and other developed nations smoke us. It isn't that we have one crap coach. It is that we don't care as a nation. Other countries shut down to watch the games--almost every TV has the game on. They mourn when they lose. They go bonkers when they win (after Argentina won the WC, I was skiing and happened to be on the lift with a guy from Argentina who claimed he didn't sleep for four days after they won--huge alcohol-fueled bender that went on and on). What percentage of our country even knew there was a soccer game tonight? The only reason I know is because of CB. The average American doesn't care and can't be bothered with it.

It isn't a perfect analogy, but take Utah HS football vs. Texas HS football. And to try to keep it comparable, let's pick a mainly white, suburban HS in Texas of similar size. The average team in TX would smoke the average HS team in Utah. Same aged white kids (mostly) on both ends. But in TX they care way more. Fridays are huge, the community gets into it, etc. Utah schools could throw a ton of money at it and would still probably lose. Because in Utah we don't care like they do.

Maybe I am way off and we are just one coach from transforming our nation into a World Cup contender. I say when Hell freezes over.
