Steve Zahn really makes the movie. Hadn't realized the guy from Fountains of Wayne wrote the song (and reportedly died of covid during the pandemic). Or that Chris Isaak plays the pastor uncle who first records the song.
Apparently there's a director's cut that adds more background about the I am Spartacus business, confirms that the Tom Hanks character is gay, etc. But some people seem to think that version is worse because it impedes the theatrical cut's zippiness.
