I found that I used excel for about everything. I never needed to load AutoCAD onto my laptop. It was only used for one class and there’s a huge computer lab with that stuff on it. The other modeling software was old for its time. It was stuff like hydrologic, structural, and hydraulic stuff, and the industry still uses them today, and they require hardly any memory.
Just for modern software besides school stuff, I wouldn’t get anything less than 16 GB RAM for my own computer, though.
