A lot of times the reaction to that kind of play is “Well, that was just kind of unlucky. What can you do?” I don’t write them off that easily. The team forcing the attack deserves a lot of credit. When I’ve been in games where we possess a lot but it doesn’t translate to goals, we have used multiple tactics to attack. One is to just create some chaos in the box, either by taking someone on with the dribble or whipping the ball in. Stuff happens that way. PKs, corners, own goals. If the other team isn’t preventing a cross in, then the defense bears some of the blame. So no, I don’t just say it was out of luck on own goals.
