Check swings in last nights Dodgers vs Rockies game
There was some controversy in the game. Teoscar Hernandez checked his swing on a 1-2 count with 2 outs. It was ruled no swing by the first base ump. Had he called it a strike, it would have been the 3rd out and the game would have been over. Instead, the next pitch was hit for a 3 run HR to cap a 7 run 9th inning for the Dodgers and put them ahead 11-9.

I’ve posted that image below, along with a check swing earlier in the inning that was called a swing by the home plate ump. I tried to hit pause at the farthest point in the swing for both batters. I think it’s pretty clear that Kike’s bat (top image) went farther than Teo’s bat. Also keep in mind that in the MLB, check swings are purely subjective. There’s no landmark to look for such as wrist breaking, bat crossing the plate, barrel of bat going in front of front hip, etc. The rule states it is a strike if the ump decides the pitch “is struck at by the batter and is missed.”

Ultimately, whether you think the ump got the call right or wrong probably comes down to which team you cheer for.
