I think it's easy to miss for those that grew up and have stayed in the church. BYU sports plays a huge role in keeping people that leave connected to the church and bringing many of them back.

I've also seen it recently become a very strong part of building community for new members. I never noticed any of this until I moved away from Utah. I've had 3 buddies reach out wanting to meet up at a game this year in Texas. All 3 have had their records removed but rethinking that decision. BYU football is keeping them connected to the religious community in a very subtle way.
