and we received a call from United Airlines asking if we could accommodate the actress Debbie Reynolds, as she had been "bumped" from her connecting flight. We sent out our stretch limo to "fetch" her and we put her up in our $1k/night Presidential suite (probably about $2,500/night now). The hotel was band new and her suite was like an apartment, complete with it's own bar, living room and grand piano.
I was just so surprised that they would not have found a flight for someone like her due to PR. I never knew the particulars as to why she didn't have a seat on the connecting flight. Possibly is was merely an issue of not having a 1st class seat available on the connecting flight. Still, it was an honor for me, a fan of her movies, to check her in. I still have the room card she signed that night.
So, who knows why airlines do what they do. Possibly it comes down to someone who is not really experienced making a decision that makes no sense--and this is only because they can.
