Reasons to be overjoyed and reasons to "pump the breaks" with MBB/BYU recruiting
Reasons to be Overjoyed:

1) KY has more than exceeded anyone's expectations with the quality of: A) him as a Pope replacement; B) the staff he's put together & C) the players he's retained and recruited

2) It seems to be a "new day" in BYU sports with the wallets of the donors and the coffers of the AD opening to get A) a coach that was about to get an NBA HC gig B) assuming his staff is being well paid to get them to leave some pretty solid situations, C) NIL money going to players at a level that put's BYU among the highest level players in the NIL game D) even getting Jay Hill on board (and KS retained) took more $ than BYU usually has been willing to spend in the past

3) There may not be as much of a detriment to the Honor Code as most of us have presumed... this is especially true in an age of unlimited transfers and in a time when many parents might want their future pro teenage kid in a safer/cleaner environment while they mature a little more.

4) Mark Pope proved that, even without a roster full of NBA talent, BYU can be competitive in the Big12, so we're all dreaming about where KY can take the Cougs with top-level talent

Reasons to Pump the breaks:

1) don't assume that all of the above will quickly or even consistently translate into high-level success in the Big12 or Tourney. There's mounting evidence about how vitally important continuity and maturity of squads and staffs are to succeding at the highest level. Gone are the days of the Mich Fab 5 or Calipari's/Roy Williams/Coach K teams loaded with one-and-dones being regulars in the Final 4. Dozens of players that aren't sure lottery picks are staying in college for much longer due to serious NIL $ instead of going the G-League or Euro-league routes. The level of talent and competition is rising every year. The amount of new faces and finding rotations/chemistry is bound to result in some head-scratching losses and frustrate most fans

2) Related to above, even though KY has a great momentum and a pristine resume for his age, he doesn't have a real track record of being an elite Head Coach yet. While no one is complaining about him so far, sometimes being the top dog is a role that takes some time to adjust to...

3) Even with Pope's "proof of concept" above, BYU still needs to get to and advance in the NCAA tourney at a much higher level. While we're all excited about the coach/players/etc, getting past the first weekened in the NCAA tourney is not an easy task, but is one that has to be accomplished within the first 2-3 years for KY or the current magic/momentum cannot and will not continue...

4) I'm fearful of becoming a "Basketball school" if it sacrifices BYU's true core identity as a Football school. While the NIL $ makes a bigger splash in non-FB sports, having a powerful football program is vital to surviving and advancing in the current world of college sports. I sure hope BYU can secure top level talent and DEPTH in the trenches/DBs/QBs through better success, recruting, NIL, etc...
