Here are the two main lessons I hope BYU fans learn from what Young is doing:

1. BYU sports have more potential than many fans previously believed

There is a pervasive narrative that (due to the honor code, church affiliation, etc.) BYU will never be able to compete at the highest levels in football and basketball because we'll never be able to land elite recruiting classes. Kevin Young has disproven this. And, incredibly, he didn't have to build up the program over many years to disprove this. He disproved it immediately. Yes, I think it's fair to say that BYU has some unique challenges with recruiting, but we also have a lot of strengths. And Young has clearly proven that with the right mix of NIL and coaching vision, many top recruits will, in fact, consider BYU.

2. We don't have to be content with mediocre coaches just because alternatives aren't obvious to average fans

Pretty much any time someone suggests replacing a struggling football or basketball coach, the geniuses on CB immediately respond with, "But who else can we even get?!?!?!?!" Sure, people who closely followed the NBA might have known who Kevin Young was a few months ago, but I think it's safe to say that he was not on the average CBer's radar. However, his astonishing recuriting success right out of the gate should help us all realize that just because there isn't an obvious replacement for a current coach it doesn't mean that incredibly dynamic, talented, hungry guys who would accept the job aren't out there.

Disclaimer: Yes, it's true that Young has won exactly zero games so far, and at this point nobody really knows how successfull he'll be, but I'd say that no matter what happens from here we have pretty compelling evidence to support the above lessons.
