It only gives you priority in selecting your seats.  There are some schools and teams who require a donation in order to purchase tickets.  However, since you do get swag, parking tickets, etc for donating, you have to make a call on how much to reduce the charitible amount of the donation.  This is usually something I let my CPA decide.
