The Big Boy programs still need and want nice and shiny win-loss records
and everyone needs at least a reasonable shot to win as many games as they lose. THAT will keep the consolidation from shrinking too much at the top-level.
The way to offset that pressure would be for the top-level of consolidation to institute similar protections and balances as the NFL, like a player draft and salary caps.
