Saw a show about Estonia in WW2. They were annexed by Russia in Hitler’s deal to
keep Russia on the sidelines, and Russia conscripted thousands of guys to the red Army. Then the Germans attacked and forced them to join SS units. So when the Red army came back in you had brothers fighting brothers, dad’s fighting sons, you’d look through your gunsight and maybe see your cousin.

Moms trying to get food to their sons on either side of a front. Estonians trying to stop guys from either side raping sisters and aunts.

All of whom really didn’t care to fight for either side but being forced to kill family members due to political winds. With all the heroism of D day, it still bears recalling that war is the ultimate suck fest for everyone.

Hard to have your family between two aggressor nations.
