Vision question for eye docs: I just had a massive change in near & distant
vision yesterday. I am 58. Most of my life my vision was 20/15. About 10 yrs ago it went to about 20/20, then about 20/40-50 (?) for both near and distant at my last exam 4 yrs ago and stayed relatively consistent.

Then yesterday morning I found my near vision was suddenly excessively worse; I could read my cell phone text/words/numbers clearly at ~12-14" from my face on Tuesday now I have to hold it arm's length to read anything, and even then it's a little blurry. But I just discovered that my distant vision is 20/15 (I swung by my optometrist and asked if I could take 60 seconds of their time and read off a standard 20/20 eye chart). Within the last 6 weeks I started to experience Type II diabetes symptoms but nothing vision related.

Questions: What would cause the rapid vision shift and what are the chances it's permanent?

(FWIW, seeing all the incredible details at a distance (trees, signs, etc) is freaking awesome.)
