Same thing happened to me with my previous iPhone and current iphone
Seems like the way I handle my iPhone I get about 2 1/2 years before the lightning cable port no longer works well. I cleaned it with a tooth pick and it helped for a while. I probably should take it into an Apple Store and have it cleaned properly.
Thank goodness Apple has moved to a USB-C port for all their newer iPhones. Excited to get one of those.
