…be a perimeter oriented big, one that can be a threat away from the basket and pull defending big men out of the paint. Also ability to give some rim protection would be nice.
Remember back to the difficulties we had on offense during the Alex Barcello years when our bigs (our 4 and 5) were Lohner and Fouss, two guys that weren’t outside shooting/perimeter threats? Opposing defenses didn’t need to worry about Fouss or Lohner on the perimeter and could play drop off and clog the paint to protect the rim or help defend on our primary scorers like Barcello. Made it hard for us to score baskets and forced Fouss to face a lot of double teams. Also allowed them to double team our ball-handler out top in the PNR and hedge him away from getting penetration.
Having a 3rd low post/in the paint big would be redundant and a waste of a scholarship. We need versatility at every position and having a big like we had with Waterman or Khalifa (a guy who can play on the perimeter and force opposing bigs to step out to the 3pt line thereby opening up the paint for layups, post touches and back cuts) would improve the roster.
