If they reported inflation accurately they would be forced to drastically increase entitlement benefits and they would not be able to sell government bonds at as low of interest rates. Inflation is the hidden tax on the middle class to pay for all of the deficit spending they voted for over the last 2 decades. But because politicians who tell the truth about our fiscal woes don't win elections the problem persists.
