Ideally, the P4 CONF championship games would be the first round of the playoffs
but I don't think any of the conferences want their 2nd best team removed from consideration. Of course, that assumes your second best team is in the conf championship. This rarely the case in the B10, and sometimes also not the case in the SEC. I think the B12 and P12 were taking top two ranked teams the last few years.
