Some kids take a little time to mature. I was a goof off in high school, but
became a scholar later as I matured. It didn't help that my parents started me out at a younger age than all my classmates, either. My father was started at a younger age and I guess it worked for him, so my parents had me start out early as well, and scholastically it was good, but it completely ruined my involvement in sports as I was competing with kids a year or two older than me. And...at that age, sports and one's popularity can run hand in hand, so that didn't help either.
I had the natural talent, but was slow to mature. Being a workaholic certainly helps, but I have, or had, close to a photographic memory, at least back then (I am getting fairly old these days), and nothing is quite the same as you get old. On a good note, people guess that I am about 20 years younger than I am, and I think a lot of that is the fact that I still work out with weights 5 or 6 days a week, just as I did at BYU. I am also fortunate to have a full head of hair, as opposed to my father and my brother, both of whom lost a lot of hair on top as they aged..
