You'll probably get some flak for this, but I wholeheartedly agree.
Distain is corrosive in communications and relationships.
As a counterpoint: if I recall it was introduced because so many people were using the smiley face sarcastically. Even if you nerfed eyerolls people would find a way to convey the same sentiment.
