It's because they wanted to force him to play as many snaps as possible in that game and not allow him to otherwise get added rest for the playoffs. They knew as soon as he broke the record that the Rams would sit him the rest of the game.

Also, I'm sure nobody wants to be the team that someone broke a record against.
