Agreed: gophers. And kill them quick or you'll have an underground freeway in

just a few days. And I can also second the advice to buy traps. Put one in and in about 15 minutes it sprung the trap and killed my nuisance. It helps to put the trap right at the entrance into an open tunnel; the gophers don't like the slight breeze into the open tunnel and so they come to the top to close it up and spring the trap.
