Big Red Thunder Flight risk
Just so we're clear: every good thing that has happened to Utah football has happened because of BYU.
They like to tell BYU fans to stop living in the past, but let's dive into it. They rebut any mention of 1984 or Ty Detmer with the all-time head-to-head record. Between the beginning of BYU football in 1922 to when LaVell took over in 1972, BYU won a whopping 5 games against Utah, with 4 ties, meaning that 2/3 of Utah's all-time victories over BYU happened over 50 years ago. Since LaVell's first season, BYU holds a 27-21 series edge.

After years of floundering in WAC and MWC mediocrity, they finally broke through in 2004 to become the original BCS buster. But Utah never makes a BCS game in the MWC if BYU doesn't threaten to sue after being told they weren't getting into the Fiesta Bowl despite being undefeated before the Hawai'i game in 2001. And the BCS doesn't exist without BYU fighting the system after that magical 1996 season that ended, again, with a Fiesta Bowl slight.

Utah never has the sustained success they've had if Kyle Whittingham, a BYU product, doesn't take over for Urban, spurning an offer from his alma mater in the process. They never take the rivalry edge if not for Urban and Kyle's vitriolic rhetoric about The Team Down South, the in-state game, the urinal cakes, the mock baptisms in the recovery tubs and the laying on of hands photo shoots.

Utah never gets into the PAC if not for religious bias and the institutional success at Utah made possible because of donations from the church that many of their fans mock. Even then, they were the emergency add when Colorado joined and Texas said no thanks. In the process, they put the axe in BYU's stomach on their way out the door. They should've gone for the head.

Their biggest accomplishment since 2008, where they beat a disappointed, still rebuilding Alabama team, is winning the PAC for the first time in a year in which they lost (and lost handily) to BYU. They love to bring up the 9 game rivalry win streak, but even with a 10 year P5 headstart, they couldn't extend the streak to 10 and bury BYU in their best season in the PAC.

Despite having 4 losses in both seasons, they flaunt their PAC championships with wilted rose Twitter handles. Once they got to Pasadena, they made their presence known by getting shellacked by Penn State in one and getting in a shootout with Ohio State's 4th string defense and giving up the most receiving yards ever to a receiver in a bowl game in the other.

Yet for all the recent success, head-to-head and otherwise, Utah still hasn't become the national brand that BYU is. Most people east of Vernal don't know the difference between Utah and the Aggies in Logan, and if they do know the difference, they hate them because their loudmouth fans run their mouths on Twitter and their 3 fans on UteHub think they're cheering for Harvard with Bama's football presence.

Whatever relevance Utah does have, it all comes back to BYU. Everything they are and everything they hope to be is tied to us. They've done everything possible to try and escape, but they can't. They're not even little brother at this point. They're the redheaded stepdaughter who, despite having no talent of their own, has used daddy's money and name to get themselves a starring role in Annie.
