HCBW and I stayed in the fire tower last night up in the Bighorn mountains. The bighorns, btw, are such beautiful mountains. I think a lot of people just pass through them on their way to Yellowstone without truly enjoying them. Every time I hike/camp in the bighorns I'm blown away how pretty they are.
This tower is the Sheep Mountain Fire Tower, it sits at just under 10k feet above sea level and on a clear day you can see Devils Tower (about 120 miles away).
We got to the tower at around 7:30 so we only had about an hour of light last night. It was a little rainy/windy when we arrived, and around 11 we had an amazing storm with thunder and lightning roll through that was fun to watch. The place is primitive, it has a pit toilet just down the hill, no water, and no electricity. It does have a stove, but you have to bring your own propane. I didn't know this so I'm glad we didn't plan to cook while in the tower and just had dinner in Buffalo instead.
You have a 360 degree view with windows all around, so the sun woke us up around 5:45. At 6 I went out on the deck and with my binoculars found deer, elk and moose.
Pretty fun experience all-around, hoping I can do it again and take my kids next time.
