A few random fall camp impressions
Slovis is exceeding my expectations. He's a very accurate passer and seems to make quick reads and get rid of the ball quickly. I've been extremely impressed. He's noticably more consistent than the others.

Overall offensive depth is improving, without a doubt. For example, I looked at the TE group the other day and was amazed at the quality of players we have buried on the bench.... some REALLY good players who will likely not see the field. Same at RB.

People might mock me for this take, but I think Lassiter might end up being Slovis' top target this season. He's getting almost no mentions, but he's quietly having a GREAT camp. He reminds me of a Cody Hoffman / Neil Pau'u: tall, rangy, strong hands, big target, smooth runner. Having said all that, I don't think we'll have a 1,000 yard receiver this year. We don't have a Puka in the corp - a guy who can go out every week and just dominate. But I really like the balanced weapons we can attack with - RBs, Xs, Ys, and Zs. I think we'll see a very diverse offense with broad distribution of the ball. I think we have the weapons for that, and I think that fits Slovis' skillset.

I really like the way Jay Hill coaches. The guy never stops talking and coaching, and he brings an intensity and urgency that hasn't been on D for a while. IMO the offense has been ahead of the defense so far in camp, but this is probably expected. Hill definitely brings a more aggressive defensive philosophy, which puts a lot more pressure on the secondary. It's interesting to me that Heckard is playing mostly nickel... is that a sign that Hill really loves the other corners? Or is it a sign that he perceives a weakness at nickel? Regardless, it seems to me that when he's on the field, Heckard is the clear leader.

Truthfully, the sample size of live reps I've seen is really small, so it's hard for me to gauge OL/DL play. But until I'm proven otherwise, I'm concerned about our DL. Yeah, I know we've added some transfers and RMs. Still, it remains THE area of greatest concern for me.

This coming week will be pretty telling. Rotations should start tightening up this week, and we'll get a much better idea of depth chart. Lots of interesting and highly competitive position battles going on.

Lastly, I'm super impressed by 3 incoming freshmen:

LJ Martin
Jojo Phillips
Jackson Bowers

Martin and Bowers already look like upperclass athletes. Big, strong, and powerful. Jojo needs a little more bulk, but I predict this kid is gonna be a superstar... he's all of 6'5" and runs like a deer.
