Matters more where BYU finishes in rankings than in B12 standings. BYU finished #13, #20, #58, #77 under Pope.
I use kenpom.com and that is adjusted for conference strength.
The first two years under Pope, BYU would have finished ahead of most B12 teams (4th & 3rd places), these last two years BYU finished near and at the bottom.
In the upcoming year, the adds of Khalifa, Baker, Glover, and Knell more than compensate for the loss of George and Williams.
Moreover, our returning players likely have an improvement edge compared to most returning players across NCAA basketball. Hall and Saunders have had a year to get past mission legs, while Atiki & Waterman were late comers to basketball and necessarily late bloomers who have chances to bring upside surprises.
Trey Stewart had led the team in 3pt shooting last summer but wasn't ready to translate that into the regular season. Remember Yo Childs also led in arc shooting the summer before his junior year but didn't bring it under the lights until his senior year. Stewart's 3pt shooting could break out this year.
Waterman had also shot much better before BYU but possibly needed a year to adjust mentally to the new environment and to Pope's demands for him to step up on defense. If he can get relaxed, happy, and enjoy himself, we could see a much improved player.
If Pope adds another capable big, as we all expect, BYU could finish in top 40. If that big turns out to be Lazar Djokovic, call it top 25.
