That's a lot of weight anytime but especially for men then. While men of that day were of a higher moral character, physically, they were products of the depression. Life was hard. Really hard. Few enjoyed the luxury to be "fit". Nutrition was terrible. Statures were smaller. They were thrust into wartime service with little notice or training, and rudimentary physical and military preparation.
Today, infantry soldiers/paratroopers regularly carry that weight (plus some), but they are more hearty, better nutrition, and more advanced fitness practices.....Regardless, that much weight still sucks beyond belief, and mobility is unbearably tough (I've carried it/parachuted it many times). Can't imagine carrying those loads into the ocean in a beach landing. Brings tears to my eyes.
