Hydrogen combustion engine efficiency worse than Fuel Cell / EV! Stupid idea.
Problems with Hydrogen Combustion:
#1) Less efficient than a Hydrogen fuel cell. A similar sized hydrogen tank for a combustion engine vs a fuel cell would expect to get about 60% the range. That means the Toyota Mirai would only go about 150 miles between needing to fill up.
Why build an engine that is already far less efficient than what is currently being offered. Even in a theoretically optimized system. . . the fuel cell is still vastly superior.

#2) Infrastructure for hydrogen. It would take a lot of money to build out the infrastructure for hydrogen fueling. While this would be money well spent if hydrogen were an upgrade. . . But as previously posted, it is actually a downgrade.

"But EV infrastructure cost" I hear you say. . . Uhhh yeah, electricity is already far more readily available than hydrogen fuel supply lines, tanks to hold it and electrolysis centers used to create it.

#3) What will be used to create the Hydrogen Fuel? Why Electrolysis of course. We are legit going to waste a ton of energy turning electricity into Hydrogen fuel just so it can power a very inefficient combustion engine??? Is that really the plan? Instead of powering the far more efficient electric 3 phase motors, we are going to go through 2 very inefficient processes to produce motion?

#4) The hydrogen fuel tank - These tanks need to be strong and withstand rapid changes in temperature. Honestly. . . The world is better if run on gas powered combustion engines instead of hydrogen powered engines.

TL;DR - Don't invest in hydrogen combustion engines. . . Even in a best case scenario this is a stupid and vastly inferior idea.
