I did the Manatee swim last April at Crystal River
I think it is the only place you can legally do it in the US. It may be different than you are expecting. It is sort of like a small lake area where much is only 5-12 feet deep or so. It connects to the ocean of course. You are taken out 100 to 200 yards or so from the dock into the "lake" area where there are mantees around. They move about 1-2 miles per hour most the time so you get in the water, upright mainly, or floating on the surface looking down and they swim right up and past you. One gave me a "kiss" (the dive master guy called it) by slowly swimming right up to me and pressing its nose onto my mask. It was alwesome, even moreso because the manatee is my spirit animal. The dive guy told me that only happens about one out of 100 groups he takes out to the "lake".

It is well worth it. I think there are a few outfitters right in the same spot that you can go with. It is easy to look them up online I think. We chose the one that has hot showers in their changing room because we were driving up to Georgia rigght when we were done and we wanted to be clean. I think there was only one that had that option. They were all similar in price IIRC. My wife and child did it to surprise me. It was great.
